JAAI, in association with JICA India Office, organised an Ikebana workshop on August 10, 2008 at Japan Foundation, New Delhi. Ikebana, a Japanese art, is the ultimate expression of flower arrangement. “Ikebana” means ‘living flower’ and it is an expression of harmony and beauty of nature. The flowers are arranged in the same way as they grow in nature. It was with this event that JAAI began its activities for the year 2008-09. It was organised as a symbol of cultural cooperation and to promote better understanding of the cultures of India and Japan.

The workshop was conducted by renowned Ikebana expert, Mrs. Veena Dass. She is the head of Sogetsu School, New Delhi (She has been recently awarded "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays" by His Majesty Akihito, the Emperor of Japan). She has conducted Ikebana workshops in different parts of the country as well as across the world. During the workshop she demonstrated this beautiful Japanese art and also helped the participants to learn and practice Ikebana. The participants were provided with materials including Vase and flowers.

The programme was open for active JAAI members and their families. About 100 persons including children participated in the programme. Children as well as adults took active part in making various colourful Ikebana arrangements. The response of the participants was enthusiastic. The workshop was not only fun but also a valuable lesson in decorating houses and bringing them closer to nature. Participants interacted freely with the Instructor to clear their doubts and learn the intricacies involved in this art.

The programme was followed by refreshment. The feedback from the participants were encouraging.
